The workshops listed in this section are primarily for parents; they will be given priority during registration.  However, all are most welcome to attend as space is available.  Parents will be given priority registration.

TOPIC

Parents As Reading Tutors (PART)

DESCRIPTION

 Parents as Reading Tutors (PART) is an easily learned, scientifically developed program that parents can use to help children who have reading problems. The program provides parents (or other adults) with step-by-step procedures to provide reading practice for students. The program is designed to increase fluency and comprehension with 10-15 minutes of daily tutoring.

This training is a collaborative effort of FDLRS/Westgate and Florida Inclusion Network/Escambia. Although originally designed for parents, teacher assistants and school volunteers who work with struggling readers would benefit from the strategies learned in this training.

Transition Workshop for Parents

DESCRIPTION

The Transition Workshop is designed for parents to learn important information regarding services available to help transition your child from school to college or full time employment.

Representatives from FDLRS, Project 10, Pensacola State College, Vocational Rehabilitation, and The Escambia County School District.

COMMENTS

This workshop is designed to help parents develop contacts with professionals within the community who can assist with the transition process. Whether your child plans to go to college, join the military, or begin full time employment, developing an effective transition plan is critical for each individual's success. Representatives from around the area will be present to answer questions and present information about the services they provide. Each participant will receive a FREE Transition Planning Guide for Families.

TOPIC

Embracing the Complexities of your Gifted Child: It isn't always easy being gifted!

DESCRIPTION

With 30+ years of experience in working with students across the gifted spectrum, Dr. Gatto-Walden is a nationally recognized psychologist who has worked holistically with thousands of gifted, highly and profoundly gifted children, adolescents and adults. In her adjunct consulting practice for the gifted, she specializes in two areas:  holistic health and well-being and educational consulting for parent groups, academic staff and social/emotional program development.  Patricia has helped parents, educators and administrators understand and accept the multifaceted inner world, needs and concerns of gifted individuals.  Dr. Gatto-Walden is a featured speaker at international and national conferences and educational workshops.  She has consulting offices in Denver, Colorado, and in Amelia Island, Florida.

This workshop is especially for parents of the gifted student, and is applicable across the grade level spectrum.

Northwest Florida State College, 100 College Boulevard East, Niceville, FL. We will meet in the Student Services Center (upstairs).

TOPIC

Community Disability Expo: The Next Step: Planning for your Child's Future

DESCRIPTION

Two opportunities; choose the one that fits your schedule! Join us for information on transitions at both the prekindergarten and high school levels. Speakers from various agencies will present information in breakout sessions, to include:

Katrina Washington- discussing how to manage your social security benefits
Dr. Cao-Nguyen (UWF)- discussing the documentation required in order to qualify for Disability Support Services at the University.
Liz Smith (NWFL State College)-discussing services available for students with disabilities at the college level
Jan Young (Child Find)- discussing important transitions in the life of the young child
Dr. Lori Garcia- discussing Project 10 (Transition Education Network) in the state of Florida
Joanne David (APD)- discussing who is eligible for services through APD

Other speakers will include:
Workforce 2020 (Jobs Plus Youth) and the School District of Okaloosa County 

In addition, there will be a vendor hall where various agencies will have information available regarding resources for students with disabilities. We will also have a room with computers, iPads and other sources of assistive technology for parents and students to experiment with the latest and greatest gadgets for student success in the classroom and in life.
