Purpose: The purpose of this bulletin is to not only keep the senior informed, but also to keep the parents of the senior informed. A copy is mailed during first semester to the home of each senior. The address used is the one which the senior has furnished to the student information system in the school’s computer banks. A second copy is given to each senior at the general meeting of all seniors in January of each year. It is the senior’s responsibility to make sure that he/she follows the instructions within the bulletin.
There may be a need to adjust some of the information within this bulletin due to unforeseen conflicts of dates and/or times with district/state events, dates, and/or times.
Questions pertaining to bulletin information should be addressed to the appropriate senior sponsor.

Seniors hold organizational meetings in which they discuss and vote on whether to pay dues or to conduct fundraisers. The Class of 2012 voted to pay dues. Democratic society results in majority rules; therefore, dues will be paid. As the year progresses and the choice for Project Graduation is decided, the seniors will be advised as to whether more funds are needed. Captain Code will keep the seniors informed on Project Graduation.
Being a senior is an expensive time. If there is a senior who has a financial hardship and cannot pay his/her dues, a request would need to be made to administration in a timely manner. These are ordered at the same time as announcements. Herff Jones is the company, and they send a representative on campus to process orders. This is done in the fall. The cap and gowns will be paid for in the spring not during the announcement orders. Once caps and gowns have arrived on campus, Mrs. Joyce Gunn, School Finance Specialist, will distribute the orders to the seniors. Once caps and gowns have been opened and removed from the package, the cost is non-refundable. Summer School Graduates should let Mrs. Gunn know their intent to keep or not to keep the cap and gown for summer graduation. This notice should be given by June 2, 2012. If kept, the Herff Jones representative will collect the cap and gown at the summer graduation site, immediately following the ceremony.
An in-house sale was done at the beginning of the year. Books can still be purchased online at www.jostensyearbooks.com. No extra yearbooks will be available. Avoid disappointment and order early..
The Scholarship File is located within the guidance department. Ms. Kimberly Corcoran, guidance counselor for seniors, extension 233, is the coordinator for the Senior Honors Night program and for Academic Awards Night. The Career Lab is housed in the guidance department.
FOR EACH SEMESTER: All parents are encouraged to take advantage of the Parent Portal in the online FOCUS teacher grade reporting system. Although each student will continue to receive Progress Reports (See Grade Reporting Schedule given to students at the beginning of the year.) and Report Cards, it is imperative that parents/guardians of seniors keep a close check on the grade status of their senior. Parents may always contact the school at extension 222 to request a parent-teacher conference, if the parent has concerns about their student’s academic status.
January 3, 2012: Senior Meeting to discuss Graduation Bulletin and to nominate Class Motto, Class Song, Class Colors, and Class Flower. If Possible Class Flower will be in graduation floral arrangements; however, if flower chosen is not easily purchased, then the floral arrangement will be generic in composite. Class Song, if feasible to be sung by the class ensemble working with Mrs. Holk, will be incorporated into the Graduation Ceremony; however, if the song and the limitations of the senior vocal ensemble do not provide for incorporation, other music will be selected by Mrs. Holk. Seniors vote on nominations during the days after the general meeting.

Exams
A definitive schedule for all applicable tests will be released to students as soon as schedule is developed by the Assistant Principal and approved by the Director of Secondary Education, Mrs. Carolyn Spooner. A calendar of these exams will be posted on the NHS website:www.northviewchiefs.com. End-of-Course Exams are state mandated and will impact the student’s final grade according to the student’s grade status at the time of taking the EOC. EOC exams are online exams. It is extremely important that each senior in these applicable courses reports to testing at the proper time.
Makeups for these students will be assigned, and these seniors, with applicable reasons for tardiness, will report back on May 25, 2012, at 8:00 A.M.
Exam Schedule for Seniors for 2012
Alterations to the following will be made to accommodate those courses
which will require an online
End-of-Course (EOC) state exam and/or a district Subject Area Exam (SAE).
Seniors may be included in the following exam requirements. Exact dates and time schedules have not been developed at this time; however, students should take note of the window of time for possible individual testing needs, since all seniors will not be required to take these exams. These exams are online Computer Based Testing.
May 21, 2012: Regular Schedule Periods 1-7

May 23, 2012: 6th Period - Graduation Orientation Meeting -Theater
Senior meetings, practices, and fun day activities are all “closed” to all visitors.
Due to uninvited guests in previous years, anyone not a senior will be asked to leave campus and to return when they have been called for pickup by the applicable senior. Please understand that grades 9-11 students are still in classes and campus security must be ensured. Campus security does not provide for normal school operations and monitoring of unsolicited guests on campus during the hours when attention is for the seniors.
Time will be until released.
Students, make sure to adjust work schedules or other obligations and/or commitments.
This meeting is for dissemination of information relative to Graduation, such as
Notes:
Seniors final debt clearance for graduation.
Mrs. Joyce Gunn, Senior Finance Specialist, will have your check-off forms for you to review. You will need this to get your Fun-Day Ticket. Discrepancies between what the teacher/coach/sponsor states and what you “believe” must be addressed with teachers between classes or during their plans.
Never disturb a class to consult with a teacher.
May 24, 2012: Senior Exams: Periods 1 and 2
Locker Clean Out: 10:30 – 10:45
May 25, 2012: Senior Exams: Make-up Exams
May 25, 2012: Senior Exam Make-up Day, per administration
Senior Makeup Exams: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in the Media Center. If the Media Center is being used for computer-based EOC’s, the make-ups will have alternative site, which would be announced before 8:50 A.M.
Failure to take an exam may result in the inability to confirm a passing grade for a course, which would impact a student’s ability to march at Graduation; therefore, it is most important to take exams in a timely manner. Makeup sessions will not be repeated, without proper documentation.
Mrs. Weaver or Mrs. Ray must be contacted, if a make-up exam is needed. Personal illness verified by a physician or a death in the family are the two excuses accepted for missing an exam.
Senior Montage: 12:15, Theater
Parents wishing to view the Montage would need to purchase a copy. This viewing is for seniors only.
Senior Montage is dependent upon senior contributions of pictures for the montage and abilities to compile montage in a timely manner.
Senior Fun Day: Mrs. Ray, Mr. Mattes, and Dean Johnson are the sponsors for Fun Day.
Held immediately following Montage, ending at 3:00 P.M. Seniors exit campus before regular student pickup traffic.
SRO and Dean will verify cleared seniors at the entrance to “Fun Day.” No visitors allowed at Fun Day.
May - TBD: Last date to purchase Project Graduation tickets from Captain Code
In order to participate in Project Graduation, you must be eligible to graduate in the regular exercises in May or be eligible to participate in the summer graduation exercises.
May (TBD): Requests for final transcripts: All colleges and universities require that you submit a final transcript including your second semester grades. Stop by guidance to complete a form requesting transcripts. Dual Enrollment students need to request a transcript from PSC as well. This request must be done through the registrar’s office on the PSC main campus.
May 28, 2012: Holiday!!!!!
May 30, 2012: Final semester grades are asked to be completed by teachers no later than 10:00 a.m. on this date. The list reflecting graduation status will be finalized on this date by Ms. Kimberly Corcoran, senior guidance counselor, so that students and parents may be given notice as to graduation status. Parents and/or students are asked not to call or visit guidance trying to obtain this information early, for this will only slow down the entire process. Ms. Corcoran will be concentrating on finalizing data and will need to have quality time for this.
May 31, 2012: Senior Honors Night
6:30 P.M. in the Theater
“Sunday Dress” is the socially acceptable dress.
Although there is no processional, all seniors are asked to arrive at an appropriate time, in order to be seated, before the program begins. If you are a student that anticipates several awards, please sit where you will not constantly have to “squeeze” out over other people. This is a courtesy gesture, and it saves valuable time. Please be early so that the program may begin on time. If you receive notification of a scholarship or an award, prior to Honors Night, you need to go by guidance to be sure that Ms. Corcoran is aware of the scholarship or award. Even if you think that you might not receive an honor, please be there to support your fellow classmates and to take part in this “memory” time.
Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and all other Honor Cords, representing class rank or honor club membership are distributed at Honors Night. Only state, district, or school items of honor may be worn on graduation gowns. No outside organization may be represented on the graduation gown.
June 1, 2012: Mrs. Joyce Gunn will issue a “cleared” slip for each senior for the senior’s ability to participate in graduation.
The cleared slip should reflect textbooks, for seniors would have finished their last exams on May 25, 2012.
For Graduation Day, If obligations are not cleared, then the senior will pick up the diploma at school on Monday after graduation at a time that is convenient with guidance and administration. Failure to clear obligations to the school and district will not prohibit a qualified senior from receiving his/her diploma, but it will prevent him/her from participating in the graduation exercises.
June 1, 2012: 10:34 A.M. Mandatory Practice for graduation. Seniors must practice to participate in the graduation exercises. Remember previous note in bulletin as to prohibition against visitors at practice.
Choosing not to practice means choosing not to march
Determination of Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be determined by the cumulative weighted GPA, to the hundredth place. The cumulative, weighted GPA’s which are the same to the hundredth place will be considered a tie, whether for either valedictorian or salutatorian.
*Graduating Seniors will be recognized with three levels of honors.
(1) Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors)
Garnet and Gold cords
4.00 or higher weighted GPA
Three weighted course credits with a “C” or higher
No grade forgiveness for a grade of “D”
An “F” in any course makes the student ineligible
Completed at least three semesters (six quarters) at the local school by
the end of the first semester (second quarter) of the senior year
(2) Magna Cum Laude
Gold Cords
3.85 or higher weighted GPA
Does not meet summa criteria
(3) Cum Laude
Garnet Cords
3.5 or higher weighted GPA
Does not meet magna or summa criteria
Graduation Group Portrait in the gym at 2:30 p.m. Seniors must be in the gym by 2:30. Parking for seniors is out front from the cafeteria on the south side of the school. Allow plenty of time to arrive and to be seated in the correct order. Valedictorian and Salutatorian are front center, and other honor students with respective graduation insignia of honor will be seated next, i.e., Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and then Cum Laude. In order to participate in the graduation Group Portrait, you must be eligible to graduate in the regular exercises in May or eligible to participate in the summer graduation exercises.
The gym is closed to parents and others during the official portrait time. There will not be an open time for other photographers to come in to photograph the senior group. The school has and must abide by a contract with Stone’s Studio to take the Senior Portrait, so anyone wishing to purchase a group photo should fill out the purchase order from Stone’s Studio.
Immediately following the official photo session, seniors report back to the cafeteria for the official line up. Graduation sponsors will give any updates and/or additional information at this time. This time is for seniors only, so please tell family members and well-wishers to see you before or after the ceremony. It is the seniors’ responsibility, not the school’s, to advise their parents/guardians and friends of the procedures for the day, for no one wants a parent/guardian or friend to feel “unwanted.”
Graduation in the gym at 4:00 P.M.
DRESS: MORTARBOARDS AND GOWNS
All graduates must be attired in caps and gowns to participate in Commencement. The mortarboard should be worn “Square” on the forehead, not tilted on the back of the head. Please try on the cap as soon as you get it to make sure that it is the right size. A neat tacking with needle and thread will prevent a lot of slipping and sliding and attaching with bobbie pins at the last minute.
Young men should wear dress, plain (no design) white shirts, darkslacks (very dark blue or very dark black is preferable and definitely no jeans), dark shoes (dress shoes, i. e., no brogans, no gym shoes, no clogs, no house shoes, no tennis shoes, no Roman sandals and so forth), dark tie (not bright red, blue, green, etc, but dark as in dark blue or black always looks best), and very dark socks (very dark blue or very dark black to match the dress slacks) with their gowns.. Girls should wear dresses that are not longer than their own gowns and dark dress shoes. No corsages, flowers, hair ornaments, or jewelry may be worn on top of the cap and gown at Commencement. No gum or sunglasses. Flowers may not be carried by the graduates.
No attire other than school designated will be allowed. Please do not attempt to wear something from an off-campus club, society, organization, etc. Any senior who attempts to wear unauthorized articles will be pulled from the graduation line and will not be allowed to “walk” unless the situation is rectified. This is a district-level, backed policy for all schools.
AFTER THE CEREMONY – Seniors will proceed to the media center where the senior sponsors will be located to collect the gowns. Each senior will be given a “cleared” slip from the teacher. The senior will proceed to the attendance window. Mrs. Laura Chancery, Mrs. Teresa Johnson, and Mrs. Joyce Gunn will receive the “cleared” slip and will issue the diploma. (Do not forget that all you receive on stage is the cover.) When you receive your diploma, please sign the graduation banner, which will be stored for future reunions.
!!!Remember, those who have not practiced the full mandatory graduation practice will pick up their diplomas from the principal on Monday following graduation. Seniors who “would have” graduated with the class but chose other options are not to sign the banner.
!!!!Any senior who “trips” or shows any signs of intentional distraction, as deemed such by the school and district personnel (not by family or friends), in any Processional and/or Recessional will receive his/her diploma the following week from district personnel. This rule is necessary to keep seniors from creating their own side shows of entertainment to the embarrassment of not only their family, but also to the visiting guests on campus. No one senior should view the graduation ceremony as his/her right to make any type of statement, other than the valedictorian and salutatorian which is expressed in their speeches, which are the culmination of all of their education. Please be mindful that each and every one of you are representative of the whole class during this ceremony, so if something is done to detract from the ceremony, it will not only cast a bad light upon yourself, but also for every member of your class.
